Bio:

Andrea was born in London in 1956, growing up black in what was still a very white England. This experience has given her a complex perspective on the country of her birth.

In her first novel, the semi-autobiographical Every Light In The House Burnin’ (1994), the story is of a Jamaican family living in London in the 1960s. Never Far From Nowhere (1996), her second, is set during the 1970s and tells the story of two very different sisters living on a London council estate; it was long-listed for the Orange Prize.

Her other books include Fruit Of The Lemon (1999) and Small Island (2004). Her latest novel, The Long Song, is set in early 19th-century Jamaica during the last years of slavery and the period immediately after emancipation.

Andrea is a Londoner, who not only lives and works in the city she loves, but has also used London as the setting in many of her novels. She has been a recipient of an Arts Council Award, and Small Island was the winner of the Orange Prize for Fiction, the Whitbread Novel Award, the Orange Best of the Best and the Commonwealth Writers Prize.

Book Launch: The World on Her Knees

Location: Earshot, The Arts House

Date:6 April, 7pm

All stories are a gift and this is no exception. However, the process of this particular story – The World On Her Knees – holds a special meaning to the book’s author, R. Chandran and his wife, Amy J Cheng. Amy Cheng, FLY Entertainment Artiste, is also an accomplished actor, host, publisher and illustrator. “It was a story given to me by my husband, Chandran, to illustrate, after I had a miscarriage in the first trimester.

From creating the baby girl in the story, imagining the world from her perspective as well as sharing her desire to see the world the way adults do, her story became mine as well,” says Amy who illustrated the book with drawings of her own. This is R. Chandran’s third children’s book. Join us for the launch and discussion of The World on Her Knees with guests R. Chandran, Amy J Cheng, Kirpal Singh, and David Fedo.
