Toro, toro!

Ah, I wondered what to post for today’s post. Well, not really. Ramadhan (fasting month) starts this coming Saturday and perhaps some of you guys might be interested in this! Mexicano food for the breaking of fast!

2 weeks ago I went to El Toro  with some of the crew. Joelyn also has blogged about this too! They’re currently at 7 Purvis street which is across the National Library. You have to walk down the street to find it.

Anyway, I decided to go there since Hisham posted about it in the process of getting their Halal cert!

EDIT: 28 March 2013 – They’ve renamed to Jay’s AND they’ve got their Halal cert from Muis.

FYI, at the moment of this post, they’ve gotten the inspectors etc to oversee the cleaning and they’re using Halal sources and there’s no alcohol or pork or lard etc. They’re just waiting for the certificate! They used to be at Orchard but now they’re at Purvis Street.

Raven who has gone to the restaurant before the move and compared the food and stuff at the present place, it’s gotten so much better too!

So whatever Hungrygowhere ratings or whatnot, ignore the ratings from when they were not at Purvis street.

House Special Nachos Grande aka beef nachos! I ordered an extra side dish of guacamole too. This was starters for us to share and oh my goodness. Melting cheese over beef with peppers and sweet pineapple intermingling with the onions and chilli beans with crunchy nacho chips?

We went “Ohh my goodness, look at that!” when it arrived.

If you don’t know what guacamole is made of, it’s made of mostly avocado. The avocado is a lucious green and is also called the butter fruit for its creaminess.

When you combine the nachoes with a bit of the guacamole, balancing it all on one chip, you get an explosion of tastes in your mouth. Sure, you can eat it bit by bit but shoving one piece in like sushi and letting the flavours combine together is so much better.

Get the nachoes to share. You don’t need the guacamole if you’re not into avocado but just get the nachoes. Also, you’ll need to share it if you’re buying a main dish.

You’ll learn why in the next few paragraphs.

I got myself a virgin mojito! There’s no alcohol served here and while there’s a Bailey’s frappe, it is not really Baileys. Max tried it and it’s more like coffee all frapped up.

While waiting for our main dishes (and making sure we didn’t drop any of the nachoes on the table while we shovelled them in our mouth), we stared at the sauces on the table. The cholula sauce is something you can find in the market but not the blue hot sauce.

I tried a bit of it (just a DOT) with my nacho chips and it was hot.

Hotter than tabasco sauce. Naturally hotter than cholula. It was even hotter than sambal or wasabi.

Don’t be ridiculous in pouring the blue sauce over your food, just try a bit of it to see if you can handle it.

Meanwhile, Jo got her tomato soup and it was tangy nice! Not like the usual recipe of tomato soup, you’ll have to try it to know the difference if you like, well, soup.

This is my beef burrito! It’s a long plate. A really long plate.

Everyone ordered something different (check Jo’s post for enchilada!) but I’ll focus more on my burrito cause I HAD it. It comes with sour cream and salsa too. If you don’t know what a burrito is, it is a wrap with beef inside, Mexican rice, chilli beans, spices and cheese on top.

I can’t eat it with my hands. I had to use my cutlery since it was large and the insides were falling out of the wrap.

This is a quesadilla. We got another one because there was an offer to show your NTUC card and I went “Oooh, we should try this! It’s a 1 for 1 offer and Max is having a quesadilla too!”.

Yeah, remember our nachoes, our mains and now this?

WELL, WE FINISHED IT IN ANY CASE.

We… didn’t have space for dessert after eating all that but nevermind. We can always come again to try it.

If you wanna try out El Toro for Latin American or Mexican Halal food, check their website out. They have their menu there including vegetarian options. Be sure to check their opening hours and make a reservation!

It’s not that large of a place so you need to make reservations for it.
