SDS 1.23 – Game of Love

SPORE! If you read the previous post, you’d know I was on the panel about SFF (science fiction and fantasy) writers existing in Singapore. This post however is on the convention itself! It was at Pasir Ris Community Club. SPORE-CON is a gaming convention. You can call it “analog” gaming though and not the digital ones you’d find on the computer. These are the ones where you use cards, miniature figurines, board games etc!

SDS 1.19 – Take a Chance on Me

We woke up to arrive at the National Library around 8am. Well, earlier since we hung around while waiting for things to be set up for the The Original Race by HIP Alliance. We registered with the team name “Adventure Crew”. Hah. Members include me (obviously), Mintea, Raven Silvers, Avariel and Joelyn.

Scholastic Asian Book Award!

Yes, my fellow fictioneers. Scholastic is giving out an Asian book award!

The main details can be found at their website here: http://scholasticbookaward.asia/

However, here are the short details!

Deadline: 31 December 2010

Entry submissions:

a. An official entry form, duly filled in.
b. Six copies of the manuscript (in case of a paper submission).
c. A recent photograph in soft copy on CD.
d. A short biography in not more than 100 words in soft copy on CD. In case of a translation,
the biography of both the author and the translator must be submitted.

Prizes

Winner gets $10,000 and a plaque! The manuscript might also be considered for publication by Scholastic Asia!

– First and second runner ups get a plaque and advice by Scholastic Asia on editing it for publication!

Anyway, it says you can send the submission via email but that is slightly redundant or risky considering it might get “lost” in emails since you still have to send physical copies of your photo and bio on a CD. Plus, you still have to send in the entry form too anywho. The address is available on the website.

Science Chronicles: Sci-Fi writing competition

Hullo, hullo indeed! Science Chronicles 2010 is a science fiction writing competition! Only thing is that it’s not for everyone but more for students. Nonetheless, if you’re 18 and under and currently in Singapore, check it out! Oh, currently it says nothing about poly students but we’ll see since I hit them up with a question on that. Deadline is 11 April 2010.

There’s 2 categories for students to be exact. They are:

Category A:

  • Secondary 3 and 4 students
  • IP schools year 3 and 4 students
  • 15-16 years of age international students studying in Singapore

Category B:

  • Junior College 1 and 2 students
  • IP schools year 5 and 6 students
  • 17-18 years of age international students studying in Singapore

Here’s the brief rules/outlines. For more details check their website here.

EDIT: Polytechnic students are qualified to enter this! They replied to me via email so just make sure which age category you’re in.

First up, guys, free workshops from 29th till 31st October regarding various types of writing for cinema, fiction and non-fiction. Check it out by downloading the pdf here (right click and save) ! It’s all totally free during this Singapore Writers Fest. Organized by NBDCS, Jacaranda and co-organized by National Arts Council, The Arts House and a part of SWF. Go spread it to your friends who’re interested in writing and all that.

And now, on towards foxes.

audience

Alright, day 2 on 25th Oct of the Singapore Writers Festival. 11 am at the Earshot Cafe and there was quite a number of people. Suddenly it occurred to me… WHERE DO THESE PEOPLE COME FROM? I didn’t realize we had much love for books here which is pretty much a YAY! Oh yes, Raven Silvers and I came to support Wena for The Proper Care of Foxes, plus Raven wanted her poster of SWF signed and I wanted to get what books I wanted before next week. (I don’t wanna lug more books for next Saturday when I’ve got my own thing on.)
