The Geylang Bazaar! In app form

Geylang Bazaar app

Hi guys.

It’s only for Android but you can get the Bazaar Geylang ’16 over in the play store for free.

What’s this app? It’s a list of food places that are pretty unique besides the usual vadeh or burger ramly stores.

Pretty much my brother went ughh, so hard to find all the places so in the end…

We made an app to just list them all down. Stuff might not be too accurate but we tried to take pics of the price list too. For more details, read the google play description of the app!

Sorry iOS users, it costs a pretty penny to be a developer and to set up a store there so… tough luck!

TL;DR

My bro and I went about the crowd taking pictures of nearly every stall of notable food. The rest were generic then no need to take pic. He coded the app, the end.

Pull it

Pulled beef fries with cheese

I just wanted to talk about this pulled beef fries with cheese I ate at Wilder. It’s under the ‘sides’ in the menu if you ever decide to visit them.

My crew and I just wanted to go there for the desserts but we did skip lunch somewhat just to eat dinner, so there. We ordered our mains which was pretty delicious and pretty much choped the tarts that was left that night.

However, this pulled beef fries and cheese.

This is not meant to be shared.

It’s meant to be hoarded by one or you could buy the pulled beef with the mashed cauliflower and vege instead because wow.

As Max said. This is like a Halal version of what char siew is.

The caramelization.

The softness.

The generous pile of beef under that baked cheese.

Oh no, oh no.

And there were four of us there.

It was gone.

Just gone.

Good bye.

No more.

And then our mains came so all was well.

How to Lo Hei for real

Hello friends.

All the guides online I’ve seen are how to lo hei are if you’re Chinese and you would totally get what it means.

This is a how to lo hei guide from a non-Chinese for our international friends who have come to learn our cultures also for Singaporeans here who haven’t experienced a lo hei before.

My drawings will be replaced with pictures but I wanted to get this out before tonight or noonish when corporate yushengs are had in offices.

FIRSTLY. Yes, number 1 questions is always is yu sheng, Halal?

Well, it’s a bunch of vegetables and either raw fish but mostly, if you’re in an office or whatever people will prefer to get smoked salmon since they can keep it in the fridge or somewhere while waiting for everyone to gather.

So for you vegetarians, it’s not uh vegetarian unless they got the vegetarian pack aka no fish. There’s crackers too so yes, if you want to look, it’s only the fish and the crackers.

The rest are pickled vegetables.

You can get tons of Halal Yu Sheng sets in the supermarket because it’s freaking packed vegetables in tiny containers.

Yu Sheng

It’s usually on a plate or in a plastic bowl/plate thing if you buy those sets from the supermarket since it’s easier for them to pack.

OK. HERE IT IS.

If you’re new to lo hei. You just joined  a company and stuff and this is new to you, THIS IS HOW to make you look like a professional lo hei-er. If you’re doing it at a restaurant, you can ignore below because all is SET UP for you.

How to Lo Hei for Real

1) PAPER IT ALL OVER

Paper the table

Yes. PLACE NEWSPAPER all over your table and maybe even the floor. Once, I had one year where we pre-empted because we had low ceilings and put newspaper on the ceiling. This is important especially if you don’t want the cleaners to be pissy at you in your work place OR yourself for not thinking of it first.

Do you know what a lo hei is? It is for luck and prosperity and we want that immensely so the higher the better, mmkay?

Flung

I walked by Flavour Flings on my way to the coffeeshop previously but they weren’t officially opened yet.

Now they were and I walked in. It was a pretty simple layout with a chalkboard of sorts painted on the wall above their cashier (only cash please!) front.

Ok, very well.

I did flip through their menu, pages on a clipboard and settled for nacho cheese fries. Especially when I noticed something…

Their menu had turkey ham, salmon and chicken sausages. There were no signs of bacon at all. A hipster cafe always had bacon spammed (pun!) everywhere because it was a thing to do. This was a big clue to me… Was it Halal?

Bagedil Tahu Recipe

the ingredients

Or in other words, bagedil that is made of toufu. Usually bagedil is made of potatoes but my family makes both variations. The potato and the toufu ones. You can probably find the recipe easily for the potato one since it’s everywhere, this is the one made of toufu. Also, cause my friends asked me for the recipe, so here you go since it’s a holiday today and I managed to take pictures on how to make it.

The ingredients:

2 red chillies

1 egg

A bunch of parsley (daun sup)

Fried onions or shallots

Handful of prawns

6 small firm toufu

As Asian cooking go, yes. It’s pretty much guess the amount of ingredients to put in. You can make it vegetarian by NOT putting the prawns in or if you want, you can substitute the prawns with tune or something.

We had some prawns at home so oooh, ok just added it, usually ours can be ‘plain’ without it and it is still heck delicious.

Cookie time in Clementi

Clementi Mall!

This post is brought to you by  OMY.sg becauseI got invited to check out Clementi Mall!

It’s a convenient to get to mall because it’s just outside the Clementi MRT. You can’t miss it really and it has a lot of amenities inside including a post office, so that’s cool.

A library is also on the top floor and I returned my books before I explored the mall.

It's Famous Amos!

Ahh, the basement had a lot of other food but I was checking out Famous Amos. It’s at B1-K2 by the way.

The Cheese Ark!

The Grandstand!

THE GRANDSTAND.

It’s ‘easy’ to get to it if you take the shuttle bus from either Toa Payoh or Clementi MRT station? Well, we took it from the bus station at the exit of Clementi MRT and ahhh, so nice because it can be quite ulu to get to the Grandstand if you have no transport of your own.

South side.

My main mission is to go to Pasarbella and the objectives were to find The Cheese Ark.

Oh, there are a bunch of restaurants and Giant supermarket besides Pasarbella too if atas hipster is not your thing.

It's like diagon alley?

It’s in an alley of sorts. A very narrow alley but there, beyond that would be a smallish room of cheeses in their own special cheese rack/rooms!

The Cheese Ark!

TADAAAAA. Now I know why when people blog about this place, there isn’t too many pictures because it really IS just a room full of cheese! It’s like… WHAT YOU EXPECT.

And the expectation is beauty.

My platter

AAAAH. The staff there are helpful and pretty much I asked how are cheese platters? AND how much is for 1 person and the range so WAS AFFORDABLE. I don’t know about you but a platter for ONE PERSON at that is woah because of the variety of cheese. Depending on season and whatnot, you would have a different kind of cheese I would think so price varies!

It’s like omakase for cheese because I said I left it up to them.

And to eat this platter was also similar to sushi as you started with the lighter ones before you got to the intense cheeses. Oh my goodness. This was such a fun experience.

The last one was the top middle which was a blue cheese, a Guttus fig sandwich in which they placed the cheese in between a fig, a walnut and a layer of honey.

AND IT WAS SO GOOD OK? The sweetness and the cheese and the ahhhh.

If you like cheese, go to The Cheese Ark. It is worth going all the way to the Grandstand where Pasarbella is.

As I look at this picture, I want to visit the place again and get them in a take away box to eat at home where I can write about each cheese. A note to self though, I forgot I didn’t like gouda that much. I like all the rest except gouda.

This is why platters like this is good, it lets you learn which is your fav cheeses and what you would be fond of. I definitely like the lighter ones and the blue cheese which is the opposite of uh, light.

Oysters!

Oh and since we were there, we tried out Oceans of Seafood which is pretty much like a fish market or rather, seafood market! You can have the chefs sashimi/grill/boil/braise or whatever too.

Oysters, YAY. They’re delicious since they’re fresh. Always go to not dodgy and proper places for oysters if you wanna eat them straight after they’re shucked.

veganburg

Cheese and oysters do not make a meal. We did end up at Veganburg since they have a branch there too!

I kind of miss Lord of the Fries with their hotdogs so I got the sausages from Veganburg. It’s ALL VEGAN by the way. My fav from there are the spinach pops.

Anyway, that’s our adventure to Pasarbella.

I’m going back there for more cheese eventually.

I wish there was a cheese of the month club or some cheese club. I would join that. LIKE A BELLABOX but for cheese.

That’s it for Sydney!

I’m just going to compile all the other adventures we had in the rest of the week in Sydney in this post.

Hahhah. Or, tl:dr, just click the video. That one mostly has stuff of us at Luna Park though.

Olympic park!

OK, HERE IS ACTUALLY A PICTURE OF ME ON A SCOOTER in front of Olympic Park.

Cause you know, we should actually HAVE one picture of me on a scoot, scooting away in Sydney. Else I wouldn’t be in Sydney if Scoot hadn’t Scooted me here.

Try saying that ten times fast.

Sarah Does Sydney Day 1 & 2

Lord of the Fries!

So I went to Sydney and wow. What an adventure, the first thing we did while we arrived at the airport was make sure we had our data stuff! I used Optus and Lyn used Vodafone. They’re just there when you get out of the arrivals at the Sydney international airport.

Both are good but I’m fancying Optus for their $2 per day for 500mb data and free local (Australia) sms and calls. Vodafone had some deal like that too but I just had Optus cause my friend passed his microsim to me in Singapore.

From the airport, we took the train to town hall! Pretty easy really, just got a multipass with an airport exit pass and a 1 week pass. We were going to be there for 6 days so, it’s pretty ok since we took a zone 2 multipass which meant we got to travel around the main city area anyway.

The first place we walked around and look-see-ed was Lord of the Fries!

We got a lot of rice. And loot!

1 million KG challenge

I kept seeing the ad for the 1 Million Kg Challenge on my facebook and I went “Oooh” when I clicked on it. The Health Promo Board is having a new campaign where people can win stuff when they lose weight.

The launch was the weekend of 15 and 16th March at Ngee Ann City. I had been waiting to know where the weigh in kiosks were going to be at and so this was the best place to get it.

It’s actually a campaign that promotes fitness and all that. The only pissy bit is that there ARE requirements if you want to join this challenge which is the whole BMI thing.

If you’re too under their BMI range, you can’t sign up, if you’re too over you can’t sign up either. I guess it’s for their own disclaimer safety because this is a general challenge and they can’t do tailored recommendations for those who are too under or over the BMI range to join this.

Really too bad though because I know there are friends who are over their BMI target range and want to do this. Plus, BMI is not the exactly the best way to measure because everyone has a different body type. ANYWHO, this ain’t a health blog, so y’all go research on what I mean since I’m gonna just continue about the event itself!

Spoiler alert: I am within their BMI challenge range so I can join this.
