The Phantom of Oxley Castle review

Firstly, I pre-ordered (?) well not really pre-order since it was in Local Books website, they just had to deliver it to me once it was released. This is the first time I bought from them online so yeah.

I want to say this is pretty exciting. RECEIVING BOOKS (that I paid for) that is. The packaging is bright purple in real life and it’s super cheery.

I might buy more books this way just cause of the packaging cause it’s cute for specific hard to find titles in store. You guys should try it with Harris Bin Potter.

Oh and prices on that website haven’t added gst in. I would have wanted a “GST included” price, so no cheated feelings or something at the cart.

I chose for the free gift wrapping because November is a book day for a lot of reasons and the wrapping is pretty good. Hit that “gift wrapping” button if you are definitely gifting it to a friend, whoever is the wrapper, it is veeeery nice.

Oh and we get a tiny “Word Search” puzzle card which is a promo of some books available on their site.

You can click to embiggen to look see the other side of that word search puzzle. Anyway, I unwrapped it and BEHOLD.

It is The Phantom of Oxley Castle by Liana Gurung and Chloe Tong, illustrated by Anngee Neo.

My review is going to be as a book reader and not some political website trying to find hints and meaning more than me when watching the latest Taylor Swift video.

Nanowrimo in Singapore

It’s been a while since I’ve posted on this even though it happens yearly! We had our kick off party, well we call it “gentle nudge” because it wasn’t November yet but had all the briefing and info for newbies to know what would happen for the National Novel Writing Month.

For us, we brought our own food, some people brought snacks to join in the “food pile” and also random prizes for random quiz questions related to Nanowrimo to get participants to remember facts like “What do you win for Nanowrimo? Answer: Nothing! YAY!!” basically things like that.

To remind them that they don’t win anything but their own first draft of their story and a digital badge and all those things.

Mainly, it’s a marathon for yourself to complete your story.

And after the ‘official’ announcements and the whole programme bit we usually have a bit of cake and whatever snacks we’ve pooled in together and talk to each other.

It’s not often you meet other writers who are doing this too.

Besides the kick-off we have write-ins which are just scheduled meet ups somewhere to just type away.

This year’s gear for me is my phone and a keyboard attached to it. Also, yay for bagels, I do have a fondness for those with cream cheese.

Anyway, it’s simple enough, you can still join Nanowrimo. The rest is pretty much up to you to keep on course for your novel! 50,000 words in November. That’s it really. All the rest is up on the official website with the FAQ.

Gamestart 2017! And SEA Summit…

It’s been a few weeks since Gamestart was over but this year, they held SEA SUMMIT at the Pixel Building and while it was free, you had to register for it. Mainly it had industry talks about gaming.

I went to the “last” day because it had more talks about esports and streaming. If I’m not making a game or in a company making or writing one, at least I can learn more about streaming it.

The keynote on that Friday was by Yoko Taro and he did give an insightful general theme of how characters for his games are made and the story.

A Better Florist than me

I didn’t know A Better Florist was actually a real shop! I mean, there had to be one because it does free same day deliveries of bouquets and flowers but I thought it had been in some “industrial”or some hipster space because it was founded like a startup.
It’s actually a real florist shop, of course mainly they deal with online purchases but ok, what a revelation.
Anyway, on a nice Saturday afternoon I was there to join their flower arrangement workshop. It’s usually held twice or thrice a month and you can look at their flower arrangement worskhop classes here on their Event Brite.
So you know, instead of just buying bouquets from them, you can actually learn how to make a basic one.
Firstly, we learned how to dethorn our roses and there is a “kiap-er” which helps you take out the thorns. Our instructor told us to leave a few leaves (heh) on top for aesthetic and guided us step by step to prepare the flowers, their names and the type of plant they are.
I mean, you get a bunch of flowers but you need to still pretty them up by removing leaves, thorns, stray stems and all.

Hunting down the geocaches

Saturday was mainly for doing influenza things but I managed to meet up with Raven Silvers for a few geocaches.

Ok firstly we met up near Wisma and just stared at the staff making Pablo cheese tarts. It’s pretty soothing and fun to watch them pour the cheese into the crust and pretty much bake it.

After that we went hunting for geocaches!

This was also where the alleged Ixalan (Magic: the Gathering) trackable was last spotted but NO. IT IS GONE so oh well. Gotta be vague cause we don’t want spoilers for people who hunt down caches.

We got to at least log down and oh, maybe next time I’d leave something for the next geocacher to take since there’s space for small things.

WHERE ARE YOU IXALAN TRACKABLE? If you’re still in Singapore at least I can log you.

Then we had lunch at Cineleisure because there’s this new fish and chip shop there in the basement. Still not yet time for me to head to my own thing in the afternoon so we squeezed in another hunt.

Anyway, IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE THE IXALAN TRACKABLE IN SINGAPORE IS… well, comment me. I want to hunt it down.

How a Go Ahead Driver took hostage passengers in Singapore

EDIT 8 September 9.43am: GO AHEAD SG FINALLY CALLED. ALL MY QUESTIONS ANSWERED AND YES, ISSUE IS RESOLVED AMICABLY.

Just to be clear, this is the definition of hostage because we were clearly held by the driver before we could get out.

Here’s a timeline so everyone is clear and that I was ‘fair’ to the Go Ahead Singapore‘s customer service team. ALL OF THIS was from my twitter and facebook because there’s timestamps and if you want to search it you can.

I tweeted it “live” because I was worried on what was happening especially with all those terrorist attacks in other countries. Plus the Singapore Police Force did tell us to be vigilant.

It happened on 12 August so I sent a complain email straight to their website under their feedback form once I got onto a computer. That was 10.28pm on 12 August. It showed we will reply in 5 days. Ok can. Also it was a Saturday so fine, maybe people don’t work weekends I was expecting maybe a reply in that week of 14 August at least.

Click to enlarge. I posted on 14 August to notify them of my email.(You can see also me asking them on 30 August about any update.)

14 August, around 4.49pm they called and told me that they are investigating and will see what happened with the cctv.

I was happy on this. Generic but at least they said they will update me.

Ok, but from the FB, no updates on 30 August.

Because from other people, I heard they don’t reply to their customer service complains properly (is that true or false?), let me tell EVERYONE WHAT HAPPENED THEN.

PROLOGUE OVER, Let’s get to it.

12 AUGUST, around 9pm at Nex.

It’s that narrow street where cabs, uber/grab try to go pick up their passengers and the bus stop is also packed from turning around the corner. If you have been to Nex, you know where it is.

A cab blocked the road cause it didn’t want to go forward, silly really but someone had enough (it took around 5 minutes) and asked the driver to freaking move. All the buses were stalled and oh I could finally see the bus I needed to get on!

Hurray!

Got on the bus, everyone is happy finally that the road is not blocked and yay we moved in.

And then…

At that point, the driver starts to say “I KNOW YOU ALL DON’T LIKE ME BUT THIS IS CALLED DRIVER ABUSE”. I was sitting near the front and I was confused? It was so negative… but ok.

It was still moving along the road.

And then we realized it was really slow because he stopped the bus and said that because of the ringing he feels that he is unstable. HIS EXACT WORDS. If you can get the CCTV footage of it all, you’ll see this actually happened. He didn’t let us get off the bus and since it was just two or three stops journey it was still in the ‘beginning’ and people are starting to be ??????????

A nice teenage Chinese boy, maybe even polytechnic age came down from the double decker to ask him if he’s ok and he says he’s not if the bell keeps ringing.

The boy tells the driver to relax and he’ll be upstairs to see if anyone is pressing it and says loudly for us all too, we will see if anyone is pressing at the first floor. The driver insists it is the first floor because the bell dings and will only BUZZ if it is the second floor. The boy also told the driver, maybe the bell is broken? But the driver insists it is someone.

Anyway the boy managed to calm him down and he went back into the driver’s seat.

At that point, my friends were also wondering what the heck is happening.

You should totally note the time stamp on these, because IT TOTALLY HAPPENED AGAIN. The bell kept ringing, everyone looked at each other and really.

NO ONE IS PRESSING.

By the way, the bus wasn’t really moving still, just a super slow drive. The kind you walk next to it and still can over take it.

It gave us a brief moment of hope. And it made us wonder, faulty or is it someone? But then it rang again. If it was someone… we wouldn’t know because no one was touching the bell because at this point EVERYONE was looking at each other and wondering what the heck was going on.

If you can’t see the license plate was 3457Y if you guys are into 4d or whatever.

I was tweeting this while waiting for a bus to get to my destination.

Other notes: The driver was on the radio with his HQ and calling them to tell that the bell is ringing and driver abuse is happening bla bla. Passengers were also getting disgruntled at him because he was NOT letting anyone off.

You know how we got off? The nice boy came down again from the second floor and told him maybe let us out at the next bus stop and can see how it is then?

The driver did it and WE ALL GOT OFF. (Some second floor passengers were still sitting because there were confused on what was happening in the first floor.)

He was already telling people who were video-ing/complaining to call the police because he was so sure it’s someone in the bus who did it and that there’s 11 cctvs in the bus! Another fact I learned.

SO IF THERE ARE 11 CCTVS IN THE BUS SURELY CUSTOMER SERVICE WOULD HAVE MANAGED TO INVESTIGATE RIGHT?

Because:

  1. He radioed the HQ to tell about it
  2. Got cctv

AND THAT IS THE END OF THIS INCIDENT.

Until now, no response from Go Ahead SG besides that call.

I’m going to cc LTA this blog post and also give a brief info about it because really, someone has to tell me something!

In my feedback email on 12 Aug to Go Ahead SG, I asked if the driver was going to get counselling and go on paid leave maybe? AND BEFORE ANYONE BRINGS ANY POLITICS INSIDE, the driver is a local senior Chinese man. So none of that nonsense.

WHAT I WANT TO KNOW:

  • HOW IS GO AHEAD SG HANDLING THIS
  • WHAT HAPPENS IF FUTURE DRIVERS HOLD HOSTAGE PASSENGERS WITHOUT LETTING THEM OUT? What do we do? Because he is the captain of the BUS, can drive anywhere, stop it or into ANYTHING.
  • What is your SOP!!!!

Edit: Edited for typos and tldr, driver didn’t let anyone out of bus until he knows who presses the bell.

VR Man: Fall from Grace (Part 1)

There are 13 episodes of VR Man. If you don’t know what or who VR Man is, he’s the first Singaporean Superhero on channel 5 premiering in 1998. This post isn’t going to be a listicle like everyone else trying to talk about. Bla bla ohohoh VR Man so funneee, ha ha hee hee ho ho.

No.

This post is going to be a review of each episodes because I AM ABLE TO WATCH IT AND WELL, it’s actually not as bad as what everyone remembered or perceived it to be. If you ever want to watch this, go petition to Mediacorp or something. Go FB/Tweet/Email them to bring it back onto Toggle. Heck, I bet a lot of people will actually get onto Toggle and increase their KPIs or something.

I’m going to split each episode into 2 parts because oh man. It is so wild.

Not as wild as Singapore’s NDP but wild enough because you guys. You guys, I wish you could just watch it for yourselves to see. I’m not going to be a pirate and upload the episodes somewhere, so yeah, go ask Mediacorp.

I can’t fit all my comments and screenshots for one epi in one post but here we go. PART ONE.

Get on wifi. There’s gonna be a ton of pictures. The first episode is when they try to pack in all info of the characters since I watched the other episodes and it feels “faster”.

In which I finally went to Pesta Ubin

Pesta Ubin 2017 was on 15 and 16 July and I wanted to go to it at least once since I kept putting it off for the previous years.

This year would be the year I woke up and actually headed there for the festival.

To head to Pulau Ubin, I went to Changi Point Ferry Terminal nearby Changi Village and pretty much got my money ready. It’s $3 per trip (from the time of my post) to get there so please have exact change.

If you guys are wanting to have an Ubin adventure, don’t forget to keep some cash since there’s no ATMs on the island (that I know of). And no, you don’t need a passport to get to Ubin. You just need 12 people to fill up the boat or if you’re impatient, pay the captain $36 all by yourself.

Once I reached there, I finally got to try the famous Ubin lontong. It’s just to the left of the boardwalk after you’ve reached Ubin.

I call this a success since I reached there around 10am and yes, it is so rich (lemak) and the sambal was hot (pedas) but not overwhelming. Paired with just teh, this was a good start of my Ubin adventure.

I wanted to geocache but realized I totally needed gloves for some of the places and there were too many people around so I hecked that and went on with the festivities for the day instead.
